Sapporo Clock Tower is a renowned historical landmark situated in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido. This tower, known in Japanese as "Sapporo Tokeidai," stands as a symbol of the city and is one of its oldest buildings, offering a glimpse into the past amidst the modern cityscape.

Constructed in 1878, the Sapporo Clock Tower initially served as a hall for the Sapporo Agricultural College, which is now known as Hokkaido University. Its design reflects Western-style architecture, which was quite novel in Japan at that time. The clock itself, which was installed a year after the building was completed, was manufactured by Howard & Co. in Boston, USA, and has been accurately keeping time ever since.

Today, the clock tower is not just a timekeeper but also a museum that showcases the history of the building and the city. Visitors can learn about the development of Sapporo and see various historical exhibits inside the tower.

Despite being surrounded by modern skyscrapers, the Sapporo Clock Tower remains a beloved landmark. Its charming appearance and the hourly chime of the clock continue to attract tourists and locals alike, making it a must-visit spot to experience a piece of Sapporo's heritage.

What other travelers are saying about Sapporo Clock Tower

A well-maintained building that captures Sapporo more than 140 years ago, when Sapporo was but a small town. Volunteers are eager to share the history and purpose of this educational facility, a centerpiece for the area at the time. Small models depict what the city looked like. Old books, documents, and records share the story of this historic landmark in the midst of today’s giant buildings in a sprawling city (now fifth largest in Japan).

Sapporo has a number of historic buildings that have been maintained very well through the years and the clock tower in the city center is one of them. This building is just a block away from Odori park and has a tower with 2 faces to tell the time. It's become sort of a museum now
