Hands-on Knife Making Experience with a Master Swordsmith in Gifu

Workshop Agenda

1. Morning Gathering (8:50 AM)

Your unique journey begins with a friendly pick-up at Gifu-Hashima Station. Please make sure to be at the assembly point 10 minutes early, as a prompt departure ensures a full day of crafting awaits you.

2. Introduction to Knife Making (9:00 AM – 11:30 AM)

Upon arrival at the atelier, you'll be welcomed by the master swordsmith, Asano Taro, who will provide an enlightening introduction to the world of traditional Japanese knife-making. Here, you'll immerse yourself in the ancient techniques, learning about the history and cultural significance of the craft. Under Asano's expert guidance, you'll begin hands-on work, starting with the fundamental steps, feeling the materials, and connecting with the tools.

3. Lunch Break (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM)

After an engaging morning, it's time for a well-earned break. Enjoy a delicious, specially prepared lunch with your fellow participants. This is a great opportunity to discuss the morning's experiences, share thoughts, ask questions, and bond over a shared passion for craftsmanship.

4. Afternoon Crafting (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

The afternoon session begins with a return to the atelier, where you'll shape your knife under Asano's watchful eye. This is the heart of the experience, where you'll truly connect with the art of Japanese knife-making. Feel the metal respond to your touch, and watch it take form as a functional and beautiful object. 

During the final hour, you'll put the finishing touches on your creation, learning from Asano about maintaining your knife and how to care for it. It's a moment to revel in the accomplishment of having created something truly unique, with the support and encouragement of one of Japan's few genuine swordsmiths.

5. Farewell and Drop-Off (4:00 PM – 4:30 PM)

As the day draws to a close, you'll be driven back to Gifu-Hashima Station, reflecting on the day's accomplishments and your newfound skills. This is a time to say farewell to Asano and your fellow craftsmen, leaving with not just a knife but a meaningful connection to a rich cultural tradition and a memory that will last a lifetime.
