Tour Itinerary

1. Benesse House: Architectural Beauty Meets Artistic Vision

Nestled on the picturesque coast of Naoshima Island, Benesse House isn't just a modern art museum; it's an architectural marvel and luxury resort designed by the world-renowned Ando Tadao. Perched atop a hill, every part of Benesse House offers breathtaking views of the sea, harmoniously connecting nature with artistic expression. It's not only the building's design that captivates guests but also the unique artwork infused within each guest room, offering an immersive experience where one can literally sleep with art. Here, architectural creativity and artistic vision converge to redefine the way we experience art.

2. Art House Project: A Community Canvas

In the quiet district of Naoshima Honmura, the Art House Project emerged in 1998 as an expansive art gallery spread across seven unique locations, including Kadoya, Minamidera, Kinza, and others.

This visionary initiative transformed empty houses and spaces into works of art, fostering a strong connection between visitors and the local community. Each location within the project resonates with its own distinct character and cultural vibrancy, turning once-empty spaces into a testament to creativity and community resilience.

3. Chichu Art Museum: A Subterranean Masterpiece

A hidden jewel on Naoshima Island, the Chichu Art Museum offers an extraordinary exploration of nature's relationship with art. Built mostly underground to preserve the island's natural beauty, the museum houses famous pieces by artists like Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria.

The unique design harnesses natural light to illuminate the art, creating a dynamic visual experience that changes with the seasons. The Chichu Art Museum stands as an architectural masterpiece that allows art to live and breathe in harmony with its surroundings.

4. Lee U-Fan Museum: Harmony of Time and Space

The Lee U-Fan Museum in Naoshima, Kagawa, represents a perfect blend of architecture and contemporary art. Resulting from a collaboration between famed artist Lee Ufan and architect Tadao Ando, the museum showcases an impressive collection of Ufan's works dating from the 1970s to the present. Housed in a semi-subterranean building, the museum's design offers a contemplative space where art and architecture coalesce to create a timeless experience. It's a place where visitors can pause and engage with art on a deeply personal level, reflecting the philosophies of Japan's "Mono-ha" art movement.

A wonderful experience. Viator arranged the tour very efficiently. The tour guide, Mr Ohora, was very impressive. He is very knowledgeable about Naoshima; history, musuems and details of all the art works and installations. We thoroughly recommend.

How to visit Naishimo Island Right
The Art Island is a bit spread out so having guide made our day far more enjoyable than it would have been without. To make it even better, our guide Yoji studied art and gave us information that made everything much more relatable and fun. If you like contemporary art at all you will love this tour.
