A highlight of our trip to Japan
We had a wonderful time with Sato and cannot recommend this food tour highly enough. We have been on several food tours in Japan and elsewhere and this one knocked the others out of the park, it was so much better!
We went to five different food stops including a sushi place whose owner buys whole tunas himself so can offer cuts you cannot even find in high end restaurants. Portions were more generous than we were expecting, and the tempura and soba noodles stop was so ‘locals only’ that you could tell they were very surprised by our presence. We also tried Japanese desserts at three other stops and learned about Asakusa.
Afternoon in Asakusa
We spent an afternoon walking through Asakusa with Kaz, eating, learning and generally having a blast! Kaz was a great guide - knowledgable, flexible (at one point, my wife asked about one thing she had heard about and wanted to try, and he called an audible mid-tour and added an extra stop!) and, most importantly of all, friendly. Asakusa itself is a very unique neighborhood with so much to see (e.g. the beautiful Senso-ji Temple) and, of course, to eat - we started at a stand-up sushi bar (some of the best we had during our time in Tokyo), sat at a very traditional restaurant for soba, tempura and sake, stopped for taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry) as well as dango (rice dumplings on a stick) and then enjoyed some matcha tea and ice cream for dessert. There was more than enough food to make the tour worth the price, but spending time with Kaz and his assistant (who was also really great, but I unfortunately cannot remember his name), as well as our tour-mates (a lovely couple from Toronto) made it a truly fantastic experience. I would recommend this tour to anybody visiting Tokyo and looking to experience some authentic culture and cuisine!
