Sitting atop Mt. Rokko, the ROKKO Forest Sound Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts—it's a gateway to a time when music was a crafted marvel. Wander its corridors, and you'll find yourself surrounded by the gentle melodies of age-old music boxes, the haunting sounds of automatic organs, and the curious allure of karakuri dolls, each piece a story from Europe and America's rich history between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And as you explore, be ready for a unique treat: the "Concerts without Performers," where, like magic, the air fills with seasonal tunes with no musician in sight.

But there’s more to the museum than what's indoors. Step out into the embrace of the nature garden—a patchwork of Rokko's changing seasons, offering a serene space for reflection and relaxation. If you find yourself there on a Sunday from May to October, live mini-concerts pepper the air, offering an unmissable experience. Grab a bite or a drink from the cafe, and let the sounds wash over you as you unwind on the terrace. Before you head off, the museum store awaits with musical keepsakes, from simple mementos to intricate antique boxes. Feeling hands-on? The production studio is your chance to dive into the craft, creating your own music piece with expert guidance every step of the way.

Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? If you're in the mood for an experience that's a blend of music, history, and nature, this is one journey you won’t want to pass up. So, why wait? Dive into this melodic escapade and book your visit to the ROKKO Forest Sound Museum now!

Enchanting
May 2019 We absolutely loved this place. Not that easy to get to, unless you happen to be on Mt. Rokko already. Train, bus, cable car, and another bus. Of course, they all work and feed into each other almost effortlessly but it still takes a couple of hours to get there from Osaka or Kobe. The museum itself has a rather limited collection of music boxes and a more impressive collection of large musical instruments that play themselves. The highlight, though, and main attraction for us, was the concert, or performance, of the instruments, that was happening just as we got there. We rushed to the second floor and were immediately enchanted by the lovely sounds of self-playing instruments from another century. The room was packed and equally enthralled. As a birthday boy that month, I was even allowed to turn the handle on one of them. All too soon the performance was over. The crowd thinned, but there was another, different, performance in 15 minutes. We spent the interval examining some of the instruments up close (no touching!). Another concert, fewer people this time. Another pause for us to have an up-close look, another concert. And so it went on all afternoon. We wished they were open later. There is a garden, a pretty one, with outdoor music boxes and an over-priced but cute cafe. There was an extensive gift shop, where you could evn order your own music box, made on site. But the concerts were clearly the main event. We loved it. They had to throw us out.
