Yokohama Chinatown, located in the bustling heart of Yokohama, is the largest Chinatown in Japan and a vibrant cultural hub. Established in the late 19th century, this lively district is a feast for the senses, offering a rich blend of sights, sounds, and flavors.

Visitors are greeted by the district's ornate, colorful gates, which symbolize different elements of Chinese culture. Once inside, the maze of streets is lined with over 600 shops and restaurants, each offering a unique taste of China. From steaming buns and dumplings at street stalls to exquisite Peking duck and dim sum in elegant restaurants, the culinary options are endless and irresistible.

Beyond the food, Yokohama Chinatown is a cultural treasure trove. The beautiful Kanteibyo Temple, dedicated to Guan Yu, the Chinese god of war and business, provides a serene space for reflection amidst the vibrant streets. The temple's intricate architecture and colorful decorations are a must-see.

The district is also famous for its lively festivals, especially the Lunar New Year celebrations, which feature lion dances, parades, and fireworks, drawing large crowds.

What other travelers are saying about Yokohama Chinatown

Yokohama Chinatown is a beautiful place if you're visiting the area. Once you get off the train, you walk through a very long tunnel walkway and Chinatown is just a fee metres across the road. The Chinatown is a long strip of Chinese food stores but is filled with a diversity of visitors. The street is decorated with Oriental designs so it's a great spot for photos, and offers a range of Chinese foods from Northern style baos to Taiwanese fried chicken. Other than food itself, it doesn't have much stores but the street is clean and wide for foot traffic. It's probably not a place to be at all day but definitely worth stopping by for a walk around.

Located in Yokohama, this is one of the largest Chinatown in the world. The colourful and highly ornate gates signal the spot. Once inside, food establishments can be found everywhere. Their offerings are all mouthwatering, so it's impossible to go there and not try a few of the to-go options. Or, if you want to have a more relaxed dining experience, enter one of the many restaurants there. As is to be expected, the selection of sweet and savoury dishes is outstanding. But also to be expected is the many shops selling souvenirs and other tourist-oriented goods. This is quite the experience, busy and boisterous, not to be missed if you visit Yokohama!

Spent about two hours here just walking, eating, and shopping my way through Yokohama Chinatown. I felt that most of the restaurants and shops sold mostly the same types of foods, drinks, or souvenirs...but it's Chinatown, what else could be expected? Overall, I enjoyed exploring it and it's spread out over a few blocks so plan to spend around two hours or more here

This is one of if not the largest Chinatowns in the world. We spent some time wandering around the area passing by various restaurants and shops. It is an interesting area worth visiting if you are in Yokohama but overall the entire city is a pretty interesting one. It is a 4 star for me!
It's one of our favorite places to go when we visit yokohama! Was absolutely packed because of events going on that day, but was totally worth going! Make sure you visit the port side and brick buildings afterward.
