Kochi Castle

4.3 (200)Historical LandmarkHistorical PlaceMuseumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Kochi Castle, located in Kochi Prefecture, stands as one of the few original castles in the country, having survived fires, wars, and natural disasters. Constructed between 1601 and 1611, it served not only as a military fortification but also as a residence for the Yamauchi lords who ruled the area. The castle features a main keep, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding city and countryside.

Visitors can explore various parts of the castle, including the well-preserved main tower, gates, and stone walls. The main tower houses a museum with historical artifacts and displays about the castle's history and the Yamauchi family. Kochi Castle is renowned for its architectural beauty, especially the intricate wooden interiors and the strategic layout designed for defense.

The castle grounds are a popular spot for hanami (flower viewing) in the spring and are surrounded by lush gardens and cherry blossom trees. The castle’s rich history, coupled with its picturesque setting, makes it a must-visit destination for history buffs and tourists alike.

What other travelers are saying about Kochi Castle

One of my top favourite castle. Relatively small but also the only one in Japan where the original castle tower and main keep remains intact. There's some historical materials and artwork on display to be immerse in the wonders of this amazing castle.

The Kochi Castle is an iconic tourist site with a rich historical history and one which, I found fascinating. The castle is the only one in Japan that possesses the original architecture that one would have seen during the castle’s operational period. Getting to the top of the castle is no easy task. Those with limited mobility might find the climb rather challenging, but if you’re able to endure the twist & turns and the number steps leading up you’ll be glad you did. The 360° degree views from atop the castle are simply breathtaking. One can only imagine the events that occurred at and around this castle during the Edo Period. This is definitely a place to visit should you be in Kochi Japan.

A do not miss landmark if visiting Kochi. If you are physically unable to climb the steps, that is the only excuse to miss. Fantastic views from the top. There is also a museum across the street. A lot of small displays with signs in multiple languages. You had to take your shoes off to enter the castle.

Overall experience was positive. The crowd size wasn't as large compared to visiting other castles in larger cities such as Osaka city, so you will have time to enjoy your experience. Getting to the top was the highlight, you will have a 360 degree view of the entire area. Be aware that you will have to take off your shoes before your entire the castle.

Approximately 1000 steps to the top. The park and surrounding area up to the castle house is open to the public. There is a fee to enter the actual castle. The last steps to the top floor are slippery and steep.
