SO COOL. The island is also pretty cool and I feel like there is so much to explore. We only came to see the shrine but I knew if I had more time I would want to explore the island. Since it’s not under construction anymore, it made for some beautiful photos. The deer are also so nice. The ferry runs so often you don’t really have to plan your trip too much in advance. Wasn’t busy early in the morning on a Saturday.
Got lucky and timed my visit perfectly for low tide so was able to walk right up to the structure! The wet sand wasn’t much of a hinderance either. Very beautiful to see up close.
A beautiful area but be prepared to queue for 5/10 minutes if you want to go into the shrine itself. Lots of people around all trying to find the perfect photo. The bank on the far side of the shrine was much calmer and you were able to sit and relax while looking over the bay. Lots of deer around who are not shy at all and will poke their heads into your bags looking for food.
We took a train from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi station followed by a ferry into the Miyajima island.
The tide was low so we could walk to the Tori gate. Usually during high tide the entire temple and the Tori gate look like they are floating. Check the Tide timings online before your visit.
The temple is big and beautiful. The line for the Goushuin was the longest, otherwise no complaints.
The town has a lot of amazing food and souvenirs shops. Do try the grilled scallops, very popular and tasty.
A tori gate and shrine just as you enter the island. It’s a nice shrine with great views in all directions. To get pictures of the gate without people, it’s worth coming early to beat the queues. When there is a low tide you can get closer to the gate.
Recommend this landmark as it is close to the ferry point and before the ropeway.
