Wilson's Stump

4.6 (200)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Wilson's Stump is a fascinating site on Yakushima Island. It's the remains of a giant cedar tree, believed to be over 3,000 years old before it was cut down. The stump is named after the British botanist Ernest Henry Wilson, who studied Yakushima's unique flora. What's left is a massive hollow stump with a diameter of about 13 meters, big enough to walk inside.

Inside Wilson's Stump, a small shrine and a unique view are seen through the hollow trunk, revealing the sky framed by the tree's interior. This view is famous for resembling a heart shape, making it a popular spot for photos. The site is surrounded by dense forest, adding to its mysterious and ancient atmosphere.

Wilson's Stump is part of the island's rich natural and cultural heritage. It symbolizes the resilience of nature and the passage of time. Visiting this site offers a unique experience, combining natural beauty with a sense of history.

What other travelers are saying about Wilson's Stump

I love this place than the Jomon-sugi, will feel much relaxed inside the broken cedar, you could hear the flow of spring water inside and there is a little shrine inside the tree and Seriously I was trying to take the heart shaped photo through the tree but eventually I got failed, give a try in take the Photo as heart shaped ❤️ Thanks

Very cool, enormous stump of what must of been a massive tree. The only problem is there is a set number of busses to the trail so all the tourists hiking arrive at about the same time. So prepare to walk as fast as possible to blow past everyone else if you want to arrive to take pictures without anyone else around.

Beautiful place. Walk inside the cedar tree stump and look up. At a certain angle you will see a heart. Definitely worth stopping while hiking in this area.

It is of a very impressive size. Don't forget to find a spot inside from which the outline of the stump looks like a heart shape.
