Before I talk about the ropeway and Mt Usu, be aware that this is a tourist hotspot. Even in the low season, the car parks - which are huge - are crowded with cars and tour buses. Parking ¥500 yen cash only. The area around the ropeway terminal is full of souvenir shops and cafes. It's hectic.
We didn't have to wait in line for a ticket, though, maybe because it was around lunchtime. The trip up is quite short, and the great view from the gondola is only a taste of what's to come!
The views, even from the ropeway level, are fantastic. The Mt Uzu Terrace has a small take-away drink and snack bar, and the terrace, with comfortable chairs where you can relax and take in the view, is great. If you just decide to stop here, it's already a worthwhile experience. But you can also walk up "600 stairs," as the commentary tells you, to a wider view. It's really worth the climb!! You don't need special shoes but it could get cold. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Muroran and the Hakucho Bridge. Uchiura Bay is directly below, with the Hakodate peninsular stretching out on your right into the Pacific. It's quite a vista.
The geological history of these mountains is on full display, making recent geology come to life, with fumaroles steaming away behind you. It's not quite Mt Asahidake, but an active volcano is always impressive.
Of course, many of these experiences depend greatly on the weather. Choose your day, or half-day, it doesn't need to take more than about 2 hours, and it's well worth it.
Tickets bought on Klook were cheaper than at site. Stood at the back of the cable car on the ride up and caught the red railway bridge against the autumn foilage at the foot of the ropeway.
The walk to the Southern Most View Point from the station involved some 600 stairs and climbs up and down slopes. Need to be fit to climb those demanding stairs and finish the 1.5 Hrs hike there and back. The scenery is beautiful, though.
I really wanted to love this place. But would recommend only to visit if the weather is clear. We went in a cloudy day and everything as absolutely obscured. It's a shame and we hope to visit again when it's clearer.
That said, the ropeway was smooth and we got pretty decent views until we got up to the clouds. There was paid parking (cash only) near the station.
I visited this beautiful place yesterday and I must say that it was truly magnificent, I’ve seen many places in Japan that have breath taking views and this place is up there with the best of them, in all fairness the views and scenery in Japan are all truly unique. When you first arrive you see this beautiful green area at the bottom of one of the mounts, there’s a big car park which will cost 500yen, you then make your way up to the cable car booking office and purchase your tickets at 750yen each then it’s climb aboard for the trip to the top. The further you climb the better the views, once at the top there’s a very big viewing platform and an area where you can maybe enjoy an ice cream whilst taking in the panoramic views. You then follow a trail that leads to another viewing area, be warned the steps up to the area are a tad bit gruelling-it took the wind out of my sails but when atop there are 270-degree views of the towns below, breath taking vistas on a beautiful clear day are second to none. I really hope that you take the opportunity to visit Mt Usu Ropeway Observatory I promise you that you’ll not be disappointed.
This is my second visit to the mountain because on my first visit, I could only stay there for about five minutes before I had to go back to the tour bus.
On my second visit, I could be more relaxed and take my time to explore the area. As I was up in the mountain, I took the time to breathe in fresh air and enjoy the peace and quiet.
There is a long flight of stairs to go up to the observatory and get back. So, if you do not have the physical stamina, please stay near the cable car station.
