What other travelers are saying about Shin-Hotaka Ropeway
I highly recommend purchasing a combined ticket for transportation and cable car at the Nohi bus station. It offers great value compared to buying them separately.
Before your trip, I suggest checking the weather forecast for the day. I was lucky enough to have clear skies and stunning views like in the picture.
My journey is early on a weekday around 7:00 AM from Takayama station. There were less than 40 people on the cable car, which allowed me to enjoy ample time for taking photos. (Visited on 3 Dec 2024)
Came back here again after Covid and with full gear of waterproof this time plus family and friends in tow. Views of the two gondolas up and down were awesome and super glad we chose to check out the live updates of the Shinhotaka ropeway before we drove up to the Shinhotaka station!
So although it was cloudy and foggy at Takayama, the weather update was accurate at the ropeway. Adults and kids alike had a blast playing in the snow!
Get your value coupon tickets from the ropeway station if driving up. It will include coupons for drinks/food up at mountain!
Great view of the Japanese alps, and the ride on the ropeway is fun. On top you can enjoy lunch, coffee and send a postcard from the highest post box in Japan. Only thing OSS that it’s a bit expensive especially if you want to ride all the way up, 3300¥ per person.
I suggest you to bring your own lunch to save some ¥¥¥.
I highly recommend visiting on a sunny day. The view is magnificent. There are two sections that require separate payments. The second section is longer and more expensive. What makes this gondola unique is that it is double-decker, and you can choose which one to go up with. I tried both and can assure you that there is no difference. The double-decker can only be seen from the outside. Once you board, it is the same, but the upper one is more crowded, so there is no place near the window to see the view. I recommend taking the lower deck so that you face less crowd and have a better chance of seeing the view. There are cafes and restaurants on the mountain. The viewpoint deck is spacious and offers a great view.
Spectacular views from multiple viewpoints. Keep in mind that the cable cars up and down the mountain are usually packed with people so it's difficult to take photos of the surrounding mountains. Try visiting early in the morning to see clear skies and smaller crowds.
