Gion Yamakasa

Sublocality Level 1SublocalityPolitical

Gion Yamakasa is a vibrant and thrilling festival held every July in Fukuoka. With over 770 years of history, this UNESCO-recognized event draws thousands of spectators and participants each year. The festival is centered around Kushida Shrine, where it originated as a ritual to pray for protection against plagues and disasters.

The highlight of Gion Yamakasa is the Oiyama race, where teams of men dressed in traditional happi coats and fundoshi loincloths race through the streets carrying massive, ornately decorated floats called “kazariyama” and “kakiyama.” These floats can weigh up to a ton and are often adorned with intricate historical and mythological figures, making them a stunning spectacle to behold.

Preparations for the festival begin weeks in advance, with various smaller events and float displays that build anticipation. On the day of the race, participants demonstrate their strength, speed, and teamwork as they navigate the 5-kilometer course through Fukuoka’s Hakata district, cheered on by enthusiastic crowds.

Gion Yamakasa is not just a display of physical prowess but also a celebration of community spirit and cultural heritage. The excitement, colorful floats, and rich traditions make it a must-see event, offering a unique glimpse into Fukuoka’s vibrant history and culture.
