The festival takes place from July 1 to July 15 every year. The highlight of the festival, the Oiyama race, occurs early in the morning on July 15.
Key events include the Kazariyama display, the Nagarekazari (floating kazari), and the Shudanyamamise (a parade of floats). The climax is the Oiyama race, where teams race through a 5-kilometer course.
While participation in the races is traditionally limited to male residents of Fukuoka, visitors can watch the events from designated spectator areas. Arriving early is recommended to secure a good viewing spot.
The floats, or "kazariyama," are beautifully crafted and decorated with historical and mythical scenes. They are a symbol of the city's culture and craftsmanship.
Participants wear traditional clothing called "happi" and "fundoshi." The festival includes various rituals and practices, such as purification ceremonies and offerings at Kushida Shrine.
