What other travelers are saying about Abashiri Cruise
So incredibly fortunate as we were able to do this on the one day we had at Abashiri and we were told that the weather had prevented sightseeing the four previous days. So we were in luck and it was just wonderful. We saw the drifts and lots of wild life as well. Good cruise very professional.
Great experience and a must do if you’re in Abashiri. The experience is usually 1 hour (30 minutes out to sea and 30 minutes back). You can see the drift ice only at certain times of the year Jan through to very early March. A call out is that there is no guarantee to see it so please keep that in mind. The boat itself is very warm indoors and you can leave your luggage in coin lockers or for 500 yen with staff in the office while you do the boat tour.
I visited on February 27th on a sunny day and the drift ice was at its peak, with the beautiful Shiretoko mountain range as a stunning backdrop.
However, it was quite crowded and the ice breaking ship seemed old.
I recommend making a reservation in advance as people from all over the world, as well as Japan, flock to see the drift ice during its peak season.
While the ice breaking ship trip can get a bit boring after a while, I was still happy because I got to see the drift ice up close at its fullest.
Overall, this is a very touristy trip, but if you're interested in seeing the drift ice up close with the beautiful Shiretoko mountain range, it's definitely worth checking out.
Amazing experience, worth the hours of travel to get here. The 2pm ferry was very crowded but was able to find a spot. There are a lot of seniors on this boat and the indoor sections filled out really quickly. It can get really cold in the observation deck so make sure to dress appropriately.
There is a snack bar inside the boat. In the terminal there is a “food court”, a fast food place and a gift shop with a nice selection of items.
Getting there was kinda iffy using local transit, and the signs are all in japanese, but the place is tagged properly on google maps. It’s 25 mins walk from the train station.
Fun experience if you have not seen ice crack and float back up. The sound it makes is crazy. Liked it more than I expected. It was a pleasant walk from the station. It took about a good 25-30 min. Took a break in between to have lunch. Need to book online in advance. Either online or if not available there you can try calling. But only if you speak Japanese.
