Zojoji Temple

4.4 (200)Tourist AttractionPlace Of WorshipPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Zojoji Temple is a place filled with history and culture. Founded in 1393, it's one of the most significant temples for the Jodo sect of Buddhism. Zojoji temple, with its large wooden gate and peaceful grounds, once served as the family temple for the Tokugawa shoguns, who ruled Japan for over 250 years.

Walking through Zojoji, you can see the grand Sangedatsumon gate, which dates back to 1622. It's a rare survivor from the Edo period and stands tall, offering a glimpse into the past. Near the gate, there are statues of Jizo, a protector of children and travelers. These statues, often dressed in red hats and bibs, are cared for by families who visit the temple.

Zojoji Temple is also home to the graves of six Tokugawa shoguns. In the main hall, people come to pray and find peace. Behind the temple, the Tokyo Tower rises, creating a striking contrast between old and new. Every year, Zojoji hosts various events, such as the Toro Nagashi ceremony, where lanterns are floated down the river to honor ancestors.

What other travelers are saying about Zojoji Temple

Even though it’ll take you probably 10 minutes to walk to from the train station, it’s one of the top temples to see in Tokyo. If you only have time to see one, this is probably it. You won’t immediately see it because of the massive gate but once you get in, you’ll see the temple with Tokyo Tower in the background, it’s pretty magnificent.

A historic Buddhist temple in the center of Tokyo, offering a serene contrast to the busy city. Beautiful, expansive grounds, traditional architecture, ancient trees, and a stunning view of Tokyo Tower. The temple holds deep cultural significance, with peaceful gardens and memorials. Nice getaway while if you are in the area.

Huge temple with amazing cemetery. The inside of the temple was much more ornate than some of the other ones we visited. I was fascinated by the memorials to all the children. The cemetery was partly closed but what we could tour was great as far as the different tombstones.

Upon entering the temple, you’ll be amazed by the grand opening space right in front of it. From there, you can explore the temple and take in the iconic Tokyo Tower in the background. And don’t forget to snap some photos in the backyard - there are a few great spots to capture the tower’s beauty along with the maple leaves.

This is a very large temple complex that you'll need at least an hour to properly explore. The main attractions are the shogun tombs and the small statues to unborn children. It's entirely free to explore, but goshuins (available at the main building) are 500 yen each. Try to avoid visiting on rainy days as there's very little cover.
