What other travelers are saying about Ueno Toshogu Shrine
Visited March 2024. A pretty shrine located in Ueno Park. I was drawn over to this part of the park because there was a long line of food stalls set up along the pathway to the entrance. The front of the outer grounds are free, but you have to pay a small fee to enter the inner grounds, which you could skip.
The shrine’s golden embellishments are stunning, especially when sunlight hits them. It felt like stepping into a piece of Edo-period art.
I loved walking through the path lined with the stone lanterns and lush greenery. The area is serene, and even though it’s a popular spot, it never felt overcrowded. The combination of nature and history here is just perfect.
Also, don’t miss the pagoda and the small garden near the shrine!
Another shrine that doesn't seem like much but it is more interesting because of the large ishidoro stone lanterns that were presented to the Tokugawa shogun from the daimyo feudal lords from all over Japan. These are considered national treasures and they line the way from the torii gate all the way to the shrine. It's free.
