Sumpu Castle Park

Sumpu Castle Park

4 (200)・Park・Tourist Attraction・Historical Place・Point Of Interest・Establishment

Sumpu Castle Park carries the legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of Japan’s most influential historical figures. Originally built by Ieyasu, Sumpu Castle served as his residence after he retired from his role as shogun. This site was once a bustling center of power during the Edo period, and although the original castle structures no longer stand, the park preserves the spirit of this era.

Sumpu Castle Park features reconstructed elements of the castle, including the Tatsumi Yagura, a corner tower, and the Higashi Gomon, the east gate. These structures offer a glimpse into the architectural style and defensive strategies used during the Edo period. Visitors can also explore the remains of the original stone walls and moats, which outline the scale of the former fortress.

A highlight of Sumpu Castle Park is its traditional Japanese garden. This garden is a peaceful retreat with a koi-filled pond, a teahouse, and seasonal plants that change the landscape throughout the year. Spring is especially popular, as the park becomes a prime spot for cherry blossom viewing, attracting locals and tourists alike.

What other travelers are saying about Sumpu Castle Park

There's no actual castle there, not even a reproduction. But it's a historically important place as the location where Ieyasu Tokugawa retired after being the first shogun. Now it's a peaceful park in the middle of the city.

The front architecture of Sumpu Park is absolutely stunning. Inside, the park is spacious and very comfortable, making it a perfect spot to sit back and relax. A great place to unwind.

Nice walking area with several paths, a nice garden, and two historical museums. Though the museums are 95% japanese text as of April 2024. There's also a nice 30 minute boat ride around the moat for 1000¥. The boat tour guide only speaks in Japanese as well but that's okay, you can focus on taking pictures. Note at the end of the ride the roof is lowered and you have to bend down while you go under the low bridge. One tip, board on the left side of the boat which means you'll be on the right side while going around the park. It has a better view for pictures most of the ride.

The walk around the moat was nice if you are already in the city but I would not dedicate a stop here. Not too much to see but if you are close by you could spend a hour here walking around. Bathrooms, vending machine, food stand on site.

Great destination for sightseeing. Buy a cheap 350 pp ticket to view all three paid locations - castle garden, and two rebuilt towers.
