What other travelers are saying about Shirakawa-go
A very beautiful village in the middle of the Japanese Alps. We were staying in Takayama and it was a very easy and pleasant ride to get there. And it was snowing, so it was even more magical. The issue with the village is that there are not enough restaurants to cover the number of visitors, so we had to queue for everything. Another important tip: we had 5 hours to spend in the village until our scheduled departure of our bus, after 3-4 hours we started to get bored and the last hour we had to pass it in the waiting area of the bus terminal. Something to consider.
Lovely place to spend at least half a day. The natural scenery and small houses and their history were something special. We went during summer so we were not able to witness the snow covered houses. Nonetheless, the place was beautiful and I do recommend to take a short walk up hill to enjoy the magnificent view.
This beautiful village is a must to visit when you are in Japan.
Whether a day trip or staying overnight in one of the traditional houses, regardless of the season, you will be mesmerized by its beauty.
Find time to roam around the village and capture all the photos to bring home with you.
I have been here 3-4 times and still want to come back again.
Visited on Nov 24, weather wasn’t the best but at least it wasn’t raining.
Definitely come early! I arrived with tour group before 9:30 am and by the time we were heading out before noon there was super long non-moving queue waiting for parking.
This place might be more picturesque to check out with snow but it won’t be fun to walk around 🥶 it’s cool to visit once but I don’t see the appeal of returning
Walking around was quite easy and relaxed even going to the view of the valley up the road. I took the mountain pass by the main bus station down and I can definitely see where a number of the visitors I saw wouldn't have made it.
Great history, small shops, restaurants, always cool to see a world heritage site!
