What other travelers are saying about Ryukyu Mura (Ryukyu Village)
Ryukyu Mura was my favourite local attraction during my visit, as someone curious about Okinawan (Ryukyuan) culture and history. Definitely stay for the two traditional performances (Okinawan sing along and Eisa dance) by local musicians and performers; they made the trip for me. The other visitors who speedran the dozen or so traditional buildings completely missed the point of Ryukyu Mura, which is spelled out for foreigners in the foreign-language messages of the busses there: experience the local culture. If you do decide to visit, I recommend buying tickets online as there is a 33% discount (as of this review on December 2, 2024). Machine translate the website, and use a random Japanese zip code (the zip code is required, but you can list your address as abroad). The staff at the front desk will help you with the rest, no Japanese needed; just gesture like I did.
Spend around 2 hours here with my parents exploring. There is definitely some upkeep that could be made, but it was still a fun experience to see how people lived back then and get to know the culture through the shows. You can also do lots of crafts which are great for souvenirs, try traditional tea and more.
A beautful village that has been preserved as practically an open air museum. Highly recommend watching the show they have on with an amazing band and dancers. Also all the workers were excellent and provided facts about the place. The okinawan ice cream was delicious. Loved spotting all the shesas everywhere too!
This isn't a must do for tourists, it's definitely more geared for locals and their families.
I think the grounds have seen better days. The wood homes are in need of some maintenance. It would have been something special when they were brought to this site in 1982...but time has had its effect on things as it does.
There's cultural shows on the hours and they are all well and good.
It's really a quick walk through if you don't watch one of the shows - might take 20 minutes if you look at everything once.
At 1100¥ per person it's not inexpensive for that short of a walk, but I can appreciate that it takes a team to make this place do what it's doing.
We went because we stayed nearby and had the time but honestly there's more impressive things to see in Okinawa.
Butterfly landed in my hand in there - that was nice.
nice place for cultural performance. there's one every hour or so at different venues.
there's some great local snacks here as well (okinawa donut and pohpoh).
half a day or less here is more than enough
