Pola Museum of Art

4.4 (200)MuseumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Hakone’s Pola Museum of Art is a nature and art wonder. Opened in 2002, the museum is a treasure trove of Western and Japanese art with over 10,000 pieces collected by the Pola family over decades. Imagine walking through a space where Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh hang alongside Yokoyama Taikan.

The building itself is a work of art—designed to blend into the forest, it has glass walls to let in natural light and the art feels alive. The building is mostly underground with the roof camouflaged by the forest so you feel connected to the natural world and the art inside.

Inside, you’ll find Impressionist paintings, one of the biggest in Japan. Japanese ceramics, sculptures and glass art too. A love for Western and Eastern art.

What makes the Pola Museum of Art special is that it brings together different cultures, eras and styles under one roof and keeps you connected to the Hakone landscape.

What other travelers are saying about Pola Museum of Art

Great Modern Museum in Hakone. From Gora, there's a free shuttle, you can also use the local bus. you would need a few hours although, there's about 6 galleries, there's a nice nature walk outside. If you like modern art it's good place to visit.

Fantastic buildings situated on the lush mountain forest of Hakone. The modern exhibitions can be a bit hit or miss, but the classic works are stunning, as are the outdoor walks and areas. Go early if you want to duck the biggest crowds.

The local transportation system is well connected to getting there is no problem. An interesting building that is a pleasure to walk through and feel. The permanent collection is impressive. The special exhibition was thoughtful and pulled from a variety of genres to make its point. The outdoor walk was lovely and quiet.

FYI POLA removes the cosmetics exhibits whenever there is a special exhibition and they fail to post this on their website. We came all the way to Hakone to view the cosmetics exhibit but instead saw balloon fish on the floor... Also the forest walk is beautiful but they play random flute noises constantly, causing noise pollution. Overpriced for what you get.

Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Kandisnky, Signac, Seurant, Matisse, Delaunay and other japanese artists... I really enjoyed and think its definitely worth visiting! I personally found more interesting than Open Air Museum, but suggest to check both as they have different concepts :)
