What other travelers are saying about Miyajima Oyster Festival
I was skeptical and afraid that it will be a tourist trap, but the island was well worth the visit.
The deer, the Tori gate, amazing temples and (for me most important) really nice hiking trails. A full day well spent!
Pros:
1. Iconic Landmark: The floating torii gate is a must-see and one of Japan’s most famous sights.
2. Cultural Significance: Itsukushima Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a unique architectural design.
3. Natural Beauty: The island offers beautiful views of the sea and mountains, with hiking trails like Mount Misen for those who enjoy nature.
4. Food Options: Fresh oysters and local snacks like momiji manju are widely available.
5. Wildlife: The deer roaming the island add a unique charm and are fun to see.
Cons:
1. Crowded: The main areas near the torii gate and shrine can get very busy, especially during peak tourist hours.
2. Tide Dependency: The torii gate looks best during high tide, so check tide timings before visiting.
3. Limited Accessibility: Some paths, especially to Mount Misen, might be challenging for those with mobility issues.
4. Pricey Souvenirs: Shops and food stalls tend to be more expensive compared to the mainland.
Overall:
Itsukushima Island is worth visiting for its iconic sights and cultural significance. Allocate at least half a day to enjoy the main attractions, and check tide schedules to make the most of your trip.
We spent two days walking the wonderful paths up and down Mt. Misen and around the east coast. So much to see. There is a cable car if you prefer. The iconic "floating Torrii" draws many visitors. The Daishoin temple is also a must-see. We stayed on the mainland and took the ferry $3.50 return daily.
Definitely worth visiting the island. It’s very easy and convenient to visit the island. It takes about 45 minutes from the center to the ferry. After a 15 mins ferry trip you can reach the island. I was sceptical at the beginning but when I went there I got the importance and got impressed a lot. The temple and the market were really good. If you visit Hiroshima at least for a day, you better visit here.
Take the train for about 90 minutes from Hiroshima Station. Then take the ferry for 300 yen/one way. There is a temple, a tori gate with a pretty view. The oysters here are delicious, about 200 yen/oyster
