What other travelers are saying about Kodai-ji Temple
Skipped the hype on Arashiyama and decided to come here and absolutely loved it! We arrived in mid December and saw the lovely fall colors. The shrines were magnificent. The bamboo forest was serene (and completely empty!). I'd love to come back in the spring.
(Trip was made back then on 15 Nov 2022)
We visited Kodaiji Temple for the autumn night illumination on 15 Nov 2022, with high hopes of witnessing the vibrant fall foliage that Kyoto is famous for.
Unfortunately, most of the maple trees were still green, with only a few showing hints of autumn colors, which left us somewhat disappointed.
However, the experience was redeemed by two unforgettable highlights. The projection mapping show in the main hall was absolutely spectacular—an intricate blend of light, sound, and art that brought the temple’s history and spirituality to life in a modern, captivating way.
Equally enchanting was the illuminated bamboo forest. The clever use of lighting created a magical atmosphere, with the moving shimmering lights resembling tiny fireflies or fairies dancing among the tall bamboo stalks.
Though the lack of autumn colors dampened our expectations, the serene ambiance and unique nighttime displays made the visit worthwhile.
Beautiful temple. Best to get there before 1500, because some of the areas within the temple close at 1600. Also, best to stay until well after sunset for the beautiful lighting that illuminates the grounds and bamboo forest. Transforms the buildings and foliage into a peaceful wonderland!
Beautiful temple. You pay an entrance fee to enter and explore at your own pace. Lovely views in autumn. There is a small bamboo grove section, recommended for taking photos as it is not crowded at Arashiyama. There are many steps though, elderly to note, but it is manageable.
We visited Kodaiji at night, and it was beautiful! The highlights are definitely the still pond reflecting the Japanese maple trees, and the bamboo walk back to the entrance.
