Hokkaido Ice Pavilion

3.8 (200)MuseumTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Hokkaido Ice Pavilion in Kamikawa is a one-of-a-kind attraction that takes you deep into the heart of winter. Step inside, and you're immediately plunged into a world of extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to an astonishing -41°C (-41.8°F). This is the coldest place in Japan, and it’s an unforgettable experience.

The Ice Pavilion features incredible ice sculptures that shimmer under colorful lights, creating a magical atmosphere. One of the highlights is the Ice Labyrinth, a maze of glowing ice walls that challenges and delights visitors. Kids and adults alike can’t resist the ice slide, adding a dash of fun to the frosty adventure.

A popular activity here is the “instant freeze” experiment. Wet a towel, swing it around, and watch it turn stiff as a board in seconds. This hands-on experiment is a hit with visitors, showcasing the power of the extreme cold.

Beyond the fun, the pavilion educates about Hokkaido's harsh winter climate. Exhibits detail how people live and work in such cold conditions, offering insights into local adaptations and survival strategies.

Outside, the scenery is stunning all year round. Winter blankets the area in snow, transforming it into a serene white wonderland. In summer, the landscape bursts with green, providing a striking contrast to the icy interior of the pavilion.

What other travelers are saying about Hokkaido Ice Pavilion

There was nothing much to see in this establishment. -41C experience was just fans blowing cold air right at you. 200yen sled ride inside was kind of a ripoff, took less than 10 seconds. They give you a hot tea drink right after you finish touring around inside.

Friendly staffs who greet tourists. A chance to experience the coldness between minus 20 to minus 41 degrees. Thick clothings are provided for warmth. Nothing much to see inside actually but just for the cold experience. Love the artsy restrooms beside the cafe. After the coldness, enjoying a cup of hot tea feels nice

I have to say they do very good marketing - from the -41oC room (which is basically a fan blasting colder air at you); the swinging of a wet towel; the 10 second slide; the many many instagrammable backgrounds; the amazing hospitality from tea, biscuits, spectacle warmer to the amazing uncle who introduce you to the place with his jovial hospitality. If you go in with the expectation of seeing how beautiful they can make the interior of a -20oC freezer and to see the uncle, it is actually quite a fun experience. No snow ball fights to be have inside here, just a 10 second slide - a quick drop and that's it. Estimated duration in the freezer was actually only like 15minutes in the cold room because the jackets and gloves lent to you were not made for experiencing below 0oC but rather people working in and out of a giant freezer - which is essentially what you are doing. If they continue to maintain or upgrade all those ice sculptures, this would be a recommended place to drop by and escape the sweltering heat of summer. Ample parking space, pity it is not as popular; but then again we really enjoyed having the entire freezer to ourselves.
