How to Purchase and Charge a Suica Card on Android

Follow this step-by-step guide to purchase and charge a Suica card on your Android device.

Step 1: Check Device Compatibility

Before purchasing a Suica card, ensure your Android device meets the following requirements:

  • Your phone must support Osaifu-Keitai (おサイフケータイ) or have NFC-Felica compatibility.

  • Your phone must support Google Wallet (previously Google Pay) or the Suica App.

  • Your Google account region must be set to Japan.

To check NFC compatibility:

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.

  2. Search for NFC and ensure it is enabled.

  3. If your device is NFC-compatible, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Download the Suica App or Use Google Wallet

You can add a Suica card through either the Google Wallet app or the official Suica App.

Option 1: Using Google Wallet

  1. Open the Google Wallet app (download from the Google Play Store if necessary).

  2. Tap "Add to Wallet".

  3. Select "Transit card" and choose Suica.

  4. Tap "Continue" and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Suica card.

Option 2: Using the Suica App

  1. Download and install the Suica App from the Google Play Store.

  2. Open the app and select "Create a new Suica card".

  3. Follow the prompts to set up your Suica card.

Step 3: Purchase & Set Up Your Suica Card

If using Google Wallet, after selecting Suica, you’ll be prompted to add an initial charge (e.g., ¥1,000 or more).

If using the Suica App, follow these steps:

  • Select "Create a new Suica card".

  • Enter the amount you want to load initially (minimum ¥1,000).

  • Confirm the payment using a linked credit/debit card or Google Pay.

  • Your virtual Suica card will be issued instantly.

Now, your Suica card is ready to use for public transport and payments.

Step 4: How to Charge (Top Up) Your Suica Card

To keep using Suica, you need to recharge (top up) your balance. You can do this using Google Wallet, the Suica App, or at ticket machines.

Option 1: Charging via Google Wallet

  1. Open Google Wallet.

  2. Tap on your Suica card.

  3. Select "Add Money".

  4. Choose the amount you wish to add.

  5. Confirm the payment using a registered credit/debit card.

  6. The balance will update instantly.

Option 2: Charging via Suica App

  1. Open the Suica App.

  2. Tap on "Charge".

  3. Enter the amount you want to add.

  4. Confirm payment using a linked card or Google Pay.

  5. Your Suica balance will be updated.

Option 3: Charging at Train Stations (Ticket Machines)

  1. Locate a JR East ticket machine or a Suica charging kiosk.

  2. Place your Android phone on the reader.

  3. Select the "Charge" option on the machine.

  4. Insert cash (¥1,000, ¥2,000, ¥5,000, or ¥10,000 bills only).

  5. The balance will update on your phone automatically.

Step 5: Using Suica for Transit & Payments

  • For Transit: Simply tap your phone on the ticket gate reader when entering and exiting stations.

  • For Shopping: Tap your phone on the reader at convenience stores, vending machines, and partner retailers.

  • For Automatic Recharge: If you have a compatible credit card, you can set up auto-recharge in the Suica App.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Suica Not Appearing in Google Wallet? Ensure your Google Play Store region is set to Japan and NFC is enabled.

  • Payment Issues? Make sure your registered credit/debit card supports Japanese transactions.

  • Balance Not Updating? Restart your device or try charging via a different method.

  • Device Change? If switching phones, remove the Suica card from Google Wallet before transferring to a new device.
