Get into the sumo ring!!
Fantastic sumo experience - getting to don the loincloth and get in the ring was great.
Learning the history and structure of sumo was very interesting - good mix of talking and video footage.
Our guides were friendly and enthusiastic and very helpful.
The wrestlers were a lot of fun and knew how to make the session fun for everyone.
Sitting down to share lunch is also a great idea
Strongly recommend joining in the training and having a go!
Sumo time
We arrived 40 minutes early to shin-Kawasaki station. Jim was already there. We went by car to the sumo stable where we were told the history and origins of sumo. Jim then showed us the pyramid of levels the sumos must go through to reach grand champion status. The basic rules were explained then we were given the option of participating in some sumo training with 2 retired sumo wrestlers. I would definitely recommend doing the training as part of the experience, it was so much fun and a real learning experience. We finished with lunch which was cooked by the sumos.
