Ōsu Kannon Temple

In the heart of Nagoya, Ōsu Kannon Temple captivates visitors with its rich history and cultural significance. Originally constructed during the Kamakura period (1192-1333) in Gifu Prefecture, the temple was relocated in 1612 by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu to protect it from frequent flooding.

This Shingon Buddhist temple is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddha of compassion, and houses a revered statue carved by the monk Kobo Daishi. The temple has faced numerous challenges, including fires and wartime destruction, but has always been rebuilt, most recently in the 1970s. 

Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience and spiritual devotion. Visitors are drawn to its vibrant red paper lanterns, the serene Kannon statue, and the extensive library beneath the main hall, which holds over 15,000 classic texts and sacred items, including the oldest known copy of the Kojiki, a chronicle of Japan's mythological origins.
