Nagoya Castle

4.2 (200)Tourist AttractionHistorical PlacePoint Of InterestEstablishment

Rising majestically in the heart of Nagoya, Nagoya Castle is a stunning testament to Japan's feudal history and architectural prowess. Commissioned by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and completed in 1615, this formidable fortress was designed to demonstrate power and authority.

The castle is renowned for its golden shachihoko, mythical tiger-fish ornaments glistening atop its roof, and expansive grounds that once served as a military stronghold. The original structures were tragically destroyed during World War II, but meticulous restorations, completed in 2018, have revived the Hommaru Palace to its former splendor using traditional materials and techniques.

Visitors can marvel at the intricate gold leaf paintings and exquisite architecture that once hosted the Owari-Tokugawa clan and even shoguns on their visits. Today, while the main keep is closed for reconstruction to meet modern safety standards, the castle remains a vibrant historical site with beautifully maintained gardens, seasonal blossoms, and fascinating exhibitions.

Explore Nagoya Castle's grandeur, immerse yourself in its rich history, and witness the legacy of the Tokugawa shogunate. Plan your visit today and return to an era of samurais and shoguns.

What other travelers are saying about Nagoya Castle
