Ninnaji Temple

4.4 (200)Tourist AttractionPlace Of WorshipPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a rich history and stunning beauty. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, it has served as an important religious and cultural center for over a thousand years. The temple is part of the Omuro school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and has been home to many generations of imperial family members who served as its head priests.

The temple grounds are vast and include a variety of beautiful structures and gardens. One of the main attractions is the five-story pagoda, which is an iconic feature of the temple. The Goten, or former residence of the head priest, is designed like an imperial palace and offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the past.

Ninnaji is particularly famous for its Omuro cherry trees, which bloom later than other cherry trees in Kyoto, providing a second chance to enjoy the cherry blossom season. The cherry trees are shorter and have a unique charm, drawing many visitors each spring.

The temple also features a beautiful rock garden and various halls filled with historical artifacts and artwork. A visit to Ninnaji Temple offers a deep dive into Japan's cultural and spiritual heritage, making it a must-see for anyone exploring Kyoto.

Ninnaji is a very important Buddhist temple founded in the 9th century, and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple has a stunning architecture, including the main hall and pagoda, as well as its extensive gardens all around. Really recommended!! Enjoy it :)
Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site, one of my favorites in Japan! Rich in history, established in 888 AD, and of cultural significance. Stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and the iconic Goju-no-To (Five Story Pagoda) - all in one. A profound connection to Japan's heritage.

Grounds are free, and is beautiful with lots to see, including a pagoda, gardens, and tranquil tree lined paths. It cost ¥800 to enter some buildings.

It's a nice temple, though a little bit pricey. Only went to the Emporers garden, which was beautiful, though some of the buildings were under construction. If you are in the area, I would only recommend it if it's Sakura season.

I visited this temple mostly because it was near the Golden Pavilion, but boy was I glad I did. This was easily one of the most beautiful (and peaceful/quiet) temples I saw in Kyoto. The garden was amazing, the five-story pagoda was impressive, and there were beautiful sights all around. Definitely would recommend visiting
